Finally an Idea

Reading "Creeping up on Psychological Thrillers" by science fiction author Veronica Sicoe has given me an idea on what I want to do with my film (finally). Although she talks about the genre from the point of view of writing a story or novel, the key points she discusses are applicable to all forms of media. The goal of a psychological thriller is to create tension and to play with the readers' thoughts and emotions. They often touch on subjects such as mental health and stability (or lack there of), and dealing with internal conflicts. This character vs. self conflict is what I will be using in my film as well as the subject of mental disorders and how they affect one's life. Most of the time, characters with mental disorders are often portrayed as psychotic killers whose insanity has driven them to violence. However, as seeing what mental illness does to a person in reality is something very far from this typical representation. I want to be able to portray a person dealing with mental illness in a more sympathetic light, instead of just being the insane murderer, my story will show audiences what some people struggle with every day. The tension and suspense will still be created using the character's perspective of incidences such as hallucinations. Neither the characters nor the audience will know what is real or not or what is a genuine threat. Putting the viewers into the shoes of someone dealing with serious mental illness allows them to be more empathetic when dealing with real people.
